Women's Volleyball Hopes To Shake Up Ivy Standings During Crucial Road Weekend
October 19, 2006 | Women's Volleyball
There was a level of excitement that grew from the 11-0 start of the Princeton women's volleyball team. However, if the Tigers can manage an active win streak of less than half as many matches, there will be an even greater buzz around this young and talented squad.
Princeton stands at 14-1, 4-1 in the Ivy League and travels to Brown and Yale this weekend. Brown is 6-12, 2-4 in the league, while Yale is 11-4, 6-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton is alone in second place 1.5 matches behind Yale, although only one in the loss column. Brown is tied for sixth place and likely can't afford another league loss to have any chance at the title.
Offensively, the Tigers don't have to take a backseat to any team in the league. Princeton carries the Ivy's No. 1 and No. 2 leaders in kills in sophomores Parker Henritze and Lindsay Ensign. Henritze, the 2005 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and current Ivy League Player of the Week, leads all outside hitters with 4.35, but she trails overall Ivy leader Ensign by .02 kills per game. The sophomore middle, who has thrived with longtime teammate Bailey Robinson as Princeton's setter, leads the Ivy League in both kills (4.37) and attack percentage (.460). That latter ranks more than .070 better than any other player in the league.
Robinson leads the Ivy League with 13.13 assists per game, although Yale's Ally Mendenhall is just behind her with 12.40 per game.
Both Brown and Yale rank above Princeton in digs per game, and Yale ranks ahead of Princeton in blocks. The Bears split with Princeton last season, claiming a 3-1 victory at home, while the Bulldogs swept Princeton and only dropped one game during the series. The Bulldogs fell just short of Cornell for a share of the Ivy League title, but both Yale and Princeton have already claimed home wins over the Big Red.
Game stories and box scores will be available on GoPrincetonTigers.com following the completion of each match.
