McGarvie Named Ivy Player of the Week
October 02, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- An 11-point weekend helped Princeton sophomore Holly McGarvie earn the Ivy League's Player of the Week award on Monday as she helped lead the Tigers to a sweep of Cornell and Monmouth.
In search of an offensive spark, the Princeton coaching staff moved McGarvie from the back line to midfield and the move paid almost immediate dividends. The sophomore from Medford, N.J., spurred the Tigers' to a 6-0 win on Saturday at Cornell. In the game, Princeton scored all six goals in the game's final 15 minutes, with McGarvie scoring four of them and earning an assist on another. A day later, McGarvie added her fifth goal and 11th point of the weekend in Princeton's win over in-state rival Monmouth. The weekend lifted McGarvie to second on Princeton in scoring with 11 points, two shy of the team lead.
McGarvie became Princeton's first Player of the Week Award winner this season. Freshman Tina Bortz has claimed two Rookie of the Week Awards and sophomore Katie Kinzer has been twice named to the league's Honor Roll.
The Tigers have won their last three games and resume their schedule on Saturday at 10th-ranked Connecticut.
