The Princeton field hockey team can clinch a share of the Ivy League title, as well as the Ivy League's NCAA tournament bid, this weekend, when it hosts Harvard on Saturday at 12 noon at Class of '52 Stadium. Princeton will continue its week by hosting No. 19 American on Sunday afternoon.
Princeton claimed sole possession of the top spot in the Ivy League standings with a convincing 6-1 win over Brown last Sunday. The teams were both undefeated and tied for first entering the game. After 31 scoreless minutes to start the game, Princeton took control by scoring twice late in the opening half and stretched its lead in the final half. Junior Paige Schmidt had two goals and two assists in the win, while junior Micaela Vie Brock notched two assists.
Sophomore Holly McGarvie scored the opening goal of the game for her sixth score of the season, tying her with classmate Katie Kinzer atop the Princeton goal scoring charts. She also moved into the team lead in points with the goal. Sophomore Kristin Schwab, freshman Kaitlin Donovan and junior Sarah Yuki, added the other goals for Princeton, while senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made eight saves.
A day later, Schwab and Schmidt scored for Princeton, but the Tigers fell victim to a Hofstra rally and lost 3-2 to the Pride. Vie Brock also added an assist in the game. The game marked the first start of the season for Schwab, who scored in both games over the weekend. She had missed the first 10 games of the season rehabbing an ACL injury suffered during the lacrosse season before making her season debut last Tuesday against Maryland.
The Tigers, now 7-6 for the season, will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday against Harvard. Princeton has won its last 12 meetings with Harvard dating back to a double-overtime loss to the Crimson in 1993. Princeton has now won 12-straight games against league opponents dating back to last season.
Princeton is 5-0 in the league and is one game ahead of Brown at 3-1. Harvard, Penn and Yale are all tied for third with records of 2-2. A Princeton win in either of its last two league games will eliminate those schools from title contention. Princeton has Harvard and Penn left on its schedule.
Princeton is 28-6-2 all-time against Harvard, and has a 16-2 lead at Princeton in the series. Princeton has also won the last 12 meetings. Last season Princeton clinched the Ivy League title with a 2-1 overtime win at Harvard. After Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the opening half, Schmidt set up her older sister Hillary to even the game at 1-1, and in overtime sophomore Candi Arner, who has been sidelined all season with an injury, scored the game-winning, and Ivy League championship winning, goal for the Tigers.
Harvard is 2-12 overall this season and has gone 2-2 in its last four games after starting the season 0-11. The Crimson has faced four common opponents with the Tigers. Both teams lost to Connecticut and beat Cornell and Yale. The Tigers defeated Brown while Harvard fell to the Bears. Both of Harvard's win this season have come in overtime. Harvard's two game win streak was snapped on Wednesday with a 4-0 loss to sixth-ranked Boston College.
On Sunday the Tigers return to the field to take on 19th-ranked American in a series that Princeton leads 6-1, despite falling to the Eagles last season. That game was the 2005 season opener, which went to the Eagles 4-1. Lauren Ehrlichman scored the lone Tiger goal.
American is 10-5 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League this season. After starting the season 8-1, the Eagles enter the weekend having gone 3-3 in their last six games, edging Colgate, Bucknell and Lafayette. The Eagles suffered a 5-1 loss at No. 1 Maryland on Wednesday and play at Lehigh on Saturday. American shares two common opponents with Princeton. Both teams lost by a goal to Richmond and both teams were also defeated by Maryland.
Sunday's game with American caps a stretch of five Tiger games in a 12-day period. Princeton plays just once the following week, when it hosts Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. Please note that the game will be played at Princeton. It had been listed incorrectly as being at Rutgers earlier this season.
