Navy Holds Off Tiger Rally in Southern Championship Game

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team scored four times in the final quarter and had a man-advantage with 16 seconds remaining, but could not draw even as No. 12 Navy captured the Southern Championship with an 11-10 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
After jumping to a 2-1 lead following the opening quarter on goals from Reid Joseph and Brendan Colgan, Navy jumped ahead by a goal, 4-3, at halftime. The Midshipmen extended their lead to 8-6 after three quarters before Princeton tightened the margin in the final quarter.
Princeton used goals from Eric Vreeland and Colgan to even the score at 8-8 at 5:12 of the final quarter before trading goals with Navy to make the score 9-9. Navy scored the next two goals, scoring with 2:04 and 1:42 left before Kelsch cut the lead to 11-10 with 1:30 remaining in the game. Princeton had the ball last and had a man advantage after drawing an ejection with 16 seconds left, but could not even the score and Navy picked up the win.
Eric Vreeland, Kelsch, Colgan and Nicholas Seaver all scored twice in the game. Scott Syverson made 10 saves in goal.
Princeton hosts the Eastern Championships in two weekends at DeNunzio Pool.
