October 03, 2006 | Men's Golf
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- John Sawin tied for fifth place at the Joe Agee Invitational, hosted by William and Mary, as the Princeton men's golf team placed seventh in the 18-team field.
Sawin (71-66-72-209) couldn't repeat the 66 he posted in the second round Monday on the par-70 course, the second-lowest round of the tournament in the field, scoring 72 in the final round to finish 2-under. Richmond's Jordan Utley finished 5-under to win the individual medal.
Old Dominion won the tournament just two strokes over par for the team. ODU cleared Loyola (Md.) College by nine shots as the Tigers finished at +30.
Freshman Juan Pablo Candela tied for 15th at +3 (68-72-73-213), while fellow rookie Tom Klingman tied for 36th at +12 (76-74-72-222). Sophomores Max Schechter (78-74-74-226) tied for 50th at +16 and Andrew Maliniak tied for 90th at +28 (82-74-82-238) to round out Princeton's fivesome.
The Tigers are away from competition for two weeks before heading west to play in The Prestige at PGA West in Palm Springs, Calif., hosted by Stanford and UC Davis, Oct. 16-17.
