Young Tabbed the ECACHL Goaltender of the Week
October 30, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore goaltender Kristen Young, who stopped 75 shots in two games over the weekend in leading the Princeton women's hockey team to a three-point league weekend, was named the ECAC Hockey League's Goaltender of the Week on Monday.
Young becomes Princeton's first league award winner of the season thanks to her performances in games against St. Lawrence and Clarkson. On Friday she made 46 saves as Princeton edged third-ranked St. Lawrence 6-5 at Baker Rink, snapping an eight-game Princeton winless streak against the Saints. Young made more than 14 saves in each period of the game, including 20 in the final stanza as the Tigers held on for the win. Young and the Tigers were faced with killing off 13 penalties.
One night later, Young allowed just one goal on 30 shots as Princeton and Clarkson played a defensive-minded 1-1 tie. Once again Young faced the most shots in the third period and steered away all 13 in the frame to hold onto the tie.
Young has played in all four Princeton games this season and is 2-0-2 with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.
Senior forward Kim Pearce was named to the league's honor roll as well. Pearce had two goals and an assist over the weekend, tallying the game winner in the St. Lawrence win and the game-tying goal in the Clarkson tie.
Young, Pearce and the Tigers are back in action this weekend with league games at Brown and Yale on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
