Two Second-Half Goals Lead Rutgers Past Women's Soccer, 2-0
October 04, 2006 | Women's Soccer
A strong defensive effort by the Princeton women's soccer team couldn't last for 90 minutes as the Tigers fell to Rutgers, 1-0, Wednesday night in a game televised nationally by Fox Soccer Channel.
Princeton falls to 4-5-1 on the season while the Scarlet Knights, who have been shut out only once all season, rises to 10-1-1. The game started 45 minutes late due to lightning delays.
After Princeton held the Scarlet Knights scoreless through all of the first half and midway through the second period, Caycie Gusman broke through on the second of back-to-back corner kicks with a header in the 67th minute.
Rutgers doubled the lead when Kim Brandao arced in a header in the 81st minute among a crowd in the 18-yard box.
The Tigers outshot Rutgers 3-1 in the first half, including an attempt inside the six-yard box by Aarti Jain that Scarlet Knights keeper Erin Guthrie narrowly diverted to keep the game scoreless.
But Rutgers heightened the pressure in the second period and ended up with an 8-4 shots advantage. Tiger keeper Maren Dale and Rutgers' Guthrie each had four saves.
Princeton will return to Ivy play Saturday when it hosts Brown at 4 p.m. to open a men's-women's doubleheader at Lourie-Love Field. The game can be seen locally on Patriot 8 cable on a tape-delayed basis.
