PRINCETON – The Princeton field hockey team travels to 10th-ranked Connecticut on Saturday afternoon fresh off a weekend when it scored 14 goals in two games.Princeton enters the game winners of its last three games, defeating Columbia 4-1 two weekends ago, before sweeping past Cornell and Monmouth last weekend. The three-game win streak matches the Tigers' season long win streak and Princeton has won six of its last seven games since beginning the season 0-2.
The wins last weekend pushed Princeton to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton continues to rank atop the Ivy League standings tied with Brown (2-0). Cornell (2-2) and Yale (1-1) are tied for third overall, but the Tigers have defeated each opponent. Princeton and Brown meet in the Tigers' next Ivy League game, which comes a week from Saturday at Class of '52 Stadium. Brown faces Columbia this weekend.
After scoring 14 goals in its first seven games this season, the Tigers have found their offense, scoring 14 goals in just their last two games. Six of those goals came in a 15-minute span on Saturday in a 6-0 shutout at Cornell, with four coming from sophomore Holly McGarvie. A day later, five Tigers scored in an 8-1 win against Monmouth, Princeton's biggest offensive output since scoring nine goals against Brown in the 2002 season.
McGarvie finished the Cornell game with four goals and an assist for a total of nine points. That tied a Princeton record for both goals and points in a game. She now shares the points record with Amy MacFarlane who also had four goals and an assist for nine points in an 11-1 win at La Salle in 1996. McGarvie is one of five Princeton players to score four goals in a game and the first since Ilvy Friebe scored four goals for Princeton in its 2002 win against Brown. McGarvie was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday, becoming Princeton's first such honoree of the season.
On Sunday, five players scored goals in Princeton's 8-1 win against Monmouth. Sophomore Katie Kinzer opened the Princeton scoring with team-leading sixth goal of the season and later added an assist in the game. Junior Sarah Yuki scored three times in the game, while sophomore Sarah Reinprecht scored twice, including a goal on a penalty stroke. McGarvie and freshman Kaitlin Donovan also scored goals, while junior Paige Schmidt had two assists.
Princeton will look to continue its strong run of late on Saturday at Connecticut. The game will be Princeton's fifth this season against a ranked opponent and its third against a top-10 team. Princeton is currently 1-3 in those games, defeating No. 17 William & Mary, but falling at No. 7 Penn State, No. 19 Richmond and to No. 3 Old Dominion.
Princeton is 5-6 all-time against UConn, with the series tied at 3-3 in games played in Storrs. The Huskies have won the last three games in the series, including a 4-2 win last season in Princeton. Then freshman Kristin Schwab and then senior Hillary Schmidt scored for the Tigers in the game, but Princeton could not overcome an early deficit. UConn outshot the Tigers 13-12 in the game but Princeton had two more corner attempts.
Connecticut 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big East this season. UConn enters the game having won its last five games. The Huskies have wins against Harvard, Massachusetts, Quinnipiac, No. 13 Louisville and No. 14 Cal in that span. Princeton and Connecticut have played two common opponents this season and have fared the same. Both teams suffered one-goal losses to Penn State and defeated Yale.
After the UConn game, Princeton continues its non-league slate with a game on the night of Tuesday, Oct. 10 against top-ranked Maryland. The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by CSTV.
