Today's Game
Princeton meets Old Dominion in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Field Hockey Championship. Boston University and Connecticut will meet later today in the second first-round game at the Princeton Regional.
How We Got Here
Princeton became the first team to qualify for the NCAA tournament when it clinched the Ivy League title on Oct. 21 against Harvard. Old Dominion received an at-large berth to the tournament.
The 12th Time
Princeton's NCAA tournament appearance is the 12th in school history. Princeton's first NCAA appearance came in 1982. The Tigers went until 1994 before reappearing in the tournament, but have been in 10 of the 12 tournament's since. This is Princeton's second consecutive season in the field.
Tournament History
In its 11 visits to the tournament, Princeton is 12-11 overall. It has reached the semifinals four times and the championship game twice, in 1996 and 1998. Princeton lost in the first round last season to Duke, 2-1, in double overtime.
Tourney Time at Home
Princeton is 6-1 when hosting NCAA tournament games. The Tigers last hosted a season ago when they fell to Duke. Princeton also hosted in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2001. In 2001 Princeton defeated Northeastern and Old Dominion en route to their fourth semifinal appearance.
Perfect Seven
Princeton defeated Penn 2-1 in overtime last Friday night to cap its second straight perfect 7-0 Ivy League season. The Tigers ran the table in league play for the 11th time since Ivy play began in 1979.
15th Title
Princeton's Ivy League championship was its 12th title in the last 13 years and its 15th overall. Princeton has won 15 of the 27 Ivy League championships awarded since 1979.
Player of the Year
On Tuesday junior Paige Schmidt won her second straight Ivy League Player of the Year Award. Schmidt ranks second on the Princeton roster in points with 17, on five goals and seven assists. Schmidt was also a unanimous choice for first-team All-Ivy. Schmidt became the fourth Princetonian to win two Player of the Year awards, joining Liz Fagan (1993, 1994), Amy MacFarlane (1996, 1997) and Ilvy Friebe (2001, 2002). Twelve Princetonians have won the award a total of 16 times. The League's Player of the Year has come from Princeton in six of the last seven, and 12 of the last 14 seasons.
Rookie of the Year
Freshman Kaitlyn Perrelle, a mainstay on the Tiger backline all season, was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year on Tuesday. Perrelle is now one of three Ivy Rookie of the Year award winners on the Tiger roster. She is joined by senior Allison Nemeth (the 2003 winner) and sophomore Sarah Reinprecht (the 2005 winner).
More Ivy Honors
A total of six Tigers received All-Ivy honors this season. Paige Schmidt received the honor for the second time in her career while Allison Nemeth, Holly McGarvie and Sarah Reinprecht each earned the honor for the first time. Nicole Ng and Kaitlyn Perrelle received second team honors. Reinprecht and Nemeth had receieved second team honors in previous seasons.
Double Digits
After win totals of seven and nine in the previous two seasons, Princeton won 11 games in 2006. It is Princeton's 15th season winning 10 or more games.
Not Ranked
While Princeton has received votes in every STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll this season, the Tigers have yet to receive enough votes to garner a top 20 ranking. Princeton is currently the first team not ranked, equivalent to 21st. Princeton is the only team of the 16 selected to the tournament that is not ranked in the top 20.
At Home
Princeton is 8-3 at home this season in games at Class of 1952 Stadium. Since the stadium opened in 1995, Princeton is 85-25 on the field.
Reviewing Last Week
Princeton completed the regular season with a 2-1 overtime win over Penn at home. Holly McGarvie gave Princeton a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining, only to have Penn force overtime with a goal with seven seconds left on the clock. Paige Schmidt's goal won the game for Princeton in overtime, ensuring the Tigers' perfect Ivy record.
Senior Class
Princeton's class of three seniors will play their final games at Class of 1952 Stadium during this weekend's regional. The members are goalkeepers Allison Nemeth, Juliana Simon and student aassistant coach Nate Franks.
Outscoring the Ivies
Princeton outscored its Ivy competition 25-5 in 2006. The Tigers had one shutouts in league play and allowed a single goal in the other six games.
Strength of Schedule
Princeton was 11-6 overall and 4-6 in non-league games against the nation's 13th-toughest schedule. Princeton faced seven ranked opponents and was 2-5 in those games, defeating William & Mary and American.
Against the Field
Princeton is 1-5 against teams in the 2006 NCAA tournament. Princeton defeated American, but fell to Richmond, Penn State, Connecticut, Maryland and Old Dominion.
Against Old Dominion
The Tigers will meet Old Dominion for the second time this season. Princeton is 4-11 all-time against the Lady Monarchs. Princeton is 3-3 against ODU at home and is 2-1 against the Lady Monarchs in three prior NCAA tournament meetings. Princeton beat Old Dominion in the 1996 semifinals in Boston. Old Dominion defeated the Tigers in the 1998 NCAA title game in Philadelphia, and Princeton defeated Old Dominion in the 2001 NCAA quarterfinals at Class of '52 Stadium.
Second Meeting
Old Dominion defeated the Tigers 5-0 earlier this season in Princeton. ODU took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game. The score remained 1-0 until later in the second half when the Lady Monarchs added four scores for the 5-0 final. Senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made 11 saves in the game and was helped out by two additional defensive saves.
Against Connecticut
Princeton is 5-7 all-time against Connecticut with the Huskies taking the last four meetings including a 2-0 win earlier this season in Storrs. Princeton is 1-0 against Connecticut in NCAA tournament games, with that win coming in 1998 semifinals.
Against Boston University
Princeton is 9-3 all-time against Boston University. The teams last met in the 2005 season with the Terriers winning 2-1 in overtime. Princeton is 4-0 all-time against BU at home. The teams have split their last four games against each other.
