Princeton Falls to UConn 3-0 in NCAA Second Round

PRINCETON -- Lizzy Peijs scored twice to lead seventh-ranked Connecticut to a 3-0 win over the Princeton field hockey team on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Princeton's Class of '52 Stadium in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Field Hockey Championships. The loss ended the Tigers' season at 12-7 overall.
Connecticut, which advanced to the second round by defeating Boston University in the first round, controlled play most of the game, outshooting Princeton 16-5. Princeton reached the semifinals by knocking off third-ranked Old Dominion in overtime in the first round.
The Huskies opened the scoring 12:06 into the game when Lauren Aird scored on a rebound from the side after Princeton senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made an initial save on a shot by Peijs.
Peijs made the score 2-0 with her first of two goals in the game at 20:47 when she carried the ball into the circle and shot across the goalmouth to the far side. Connecticut closed out the scoring in with a goal in the second half when Peijs scored on a penalty corner after Jennifer Kleinhaus fed her a pass from the top.
Nemeth made eight saves in the Princeton cage, while Andrea Mainiero made one for UConn. Princeton sophomore Katie Kinzer registered Princeton's lone shot on goal.
Connecticut improved to 21-3 on the season and advances to the NCAA semifinals where it will face Maryland. Princeton completes its season with a 12-7 record.
