The Princeton women's hockey team takes its eight-game season-opening unbeaten streak on the road this weekend to Central New York where it will face Cornell and Colgate in ECAC Hockey League Action. The Tigers have swept two consecutive league weekends.
Princeton is unbeaten in eight games (6-0-2) to start the 2006-07 season. That is currently the nation's third longest such streak, sitting behind defending National Champion Wisconsin (11 games) and Mercyhurst (10 games). The start is the best in Princeton history as no Tiger team has started a season unbeaten in more than five games. Princeton started 1979-80 with five-straight wins before a loss. The same thing happened in 1980-81, and in 1994-95, the Tigers went 4-0-1 in their first five before a loss.
Last weekend marked Princeton's second-straight weekend sweep at the Tigers defeated Union and Rensselaer, a week after sweeping Brown and Yale. Princeton's sweep, coupled with other results from around the league allowed the Tigers to pad their lead atop the league standings from one point to three points, although it is still very early in the league season as Princeton has 15 more league games on its schedule.
Princeton opened last weekend on Friday night with a 9-2 win over Union at Baker Rink. The game was close until late in the second when Princeton scored two goals to open up a margin before pulling away in the third period. Junior Lizzie Keady led all Princeton players with four points in the game, while freshman Melanie Wallace, senior Kim Pearce and junior Marykate Oakley all had three points. Wallace and sophomore Monica Brennan both scored their first career goals, while freshman Julie Flynn tallied her first point. Freshman Brittany Parisi earned her second win of the season in goal.
A day later, the Tigers won a tight game with Rensselaer 3-2. The Engineers, who entered the game following their first-ever league, win the day before at Quinnipiac, stayed close on the scoreboard despite being doubled-up on shots, but Princeton was able to hold on for the 3-2 win. Pearce has a hand in all three Princeton goals, scoring the first and setting up the next two, while senior Dina McCumber added two assists in her first game back in the lineup after missing three with an injury. Sophomore Kristen Young earned her fourth win of the season by making 10 saves in goal.
Princeton is back in action on Friday night at Cornell. The Tigers are 37-19-2 all-time against the Big Red and are 14-10-0 in Ithaca. Princeton has won 12 games in a row in the series, including a 7-0 win last season at home and a 5-2 win in Ithaca. Oakley led all scorers with three points in the win at Cornell, while Pearce garnered six assists when the teams played in Princeton.
Cornell is 1-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the league to start the season. The Big Red enters the weekend on a five-game losing streak, having been swept the last two weekends. Cornell's lone win came in its league opener at home over Brown 3-2. Cornell has a tie with Niagara.
Princeton is unbeaten in 15 games played against Colgate, sporting a 13-0-2 record and has won four-straight games. Princeton is 6-0-1 all-time at Starr Rink. The Tigers took four games from Colgate last season, winning both regular-season games and sweeping the Raiders in the quarterfinal round of the league playoffs. The previous season the two teams tied both meetings.
Colgate is 3-7-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the league this season. The Raiders swept Yale and Brown to open the league season and won their last game, last Saturday at Dartmouth. A day earlier, the Raiders took Harvard to overtime before losing 4-3. Colgate also has a tie against Niagara.
After this weekend's trip to Central New York, the Tigers return home to host Dartmouth and Harvard the weekend after Thanksgiving.
