The ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team looks to extend its unbeaten start to the season this weekend when it continues its league schedule at Ivy rivals Brown and Yale.
Princeton is 2-0-2 this season posting a win and a tie in each weekend of action. Princeton opened the season with a tie at 10th-ranked Boston College, the beat Quinnipiac and third-ranked St. Lawrence, before tying Clarkson in its last outing.
The Tigers started the weekend strong by jumping out to a 2-0 lead against St. Lawrence in the first 10 minutes of Friday night's game. Princeton later had leads of 4-2 and 6-3 before St. Lawrence closed the gap late. Sophomore goaltender Kristen Young was the difference though; as she stopped 46 of the 51 shots she faced to secure the win for Princeton. Junior Marykate Oakley had two goals and an assist in the game, while senior Kim Pearce scored the game winner and notched an assist.
A day later, Clarkson used an extra-attacker goal on a delayed penalty to take a 1-0 lead in the first period before the Tigers tied the game with a power-play goal in the second period. Pearce scored the goal with assists to Oakley and senior Laura Watt. Young made 29 saves in the tie.
For her performances Young earned her first ECACHL Goaltender of the Week Award. She completed the weekend by making 75 saves on 81 shots in two games. The league also recognized Pearce as she was named to the honor roll. It marked the second season in a row that Pearce had the game-winning and game-tying goals in a three-point home weekend against St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
Pearce, Watt and Oakley have scored points for the Tigers in all four games this season. Oakley leads the team with four goals and seven points. Pearce has six points, while all five of Watt's points have been assists.
The Tigers visit Brown on Saturday afternoon to begin the weekend against the only team last season to defeat the Tigers twice. Brown won the first game of the three 4-3 at home, while Princeton won the regular-season game at home by a 3-2 score. The two teams later met in the ECACHL semifinals at St. Lawrence where Brown won 1-0 despite being outshot 42-16. The all-time series between the schools is tied at 27-27-1, and is tied in Providence 14-14-1. Brown won the last meeting last season.
The Tigers complete the weekend at Yale on Sunday afternoon. Princeton and Yale have met 56 times with Princeton holding a decisive 46-8-2 series edge. Princeton took three of four points from Yale last season. The teams tied 5-5 in New Haven as Watt's game-tying goal completed a Princeton comeback. The Tigers blanked Yale 3-0 in the regular season finale at Baker Rink to clinch the 2006 Ivy League title. Junior Sonja Novak scored the game winner in the game and then senior Heather Jackson added two goals. Princeton and Yale also played this preseason in a scrimmage with Princeton winning 2-0. Oakley and Novak scored the Tiger goals that day.
Princeton will return home the following weekend to host league games against Union and Rensselaer.
