Top-Ranked Mercyhurst Up Next For Women's Hockey
November 30, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
The ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey looks to get back on track this weekend with a pair of games at top-ranked Mercyhurst. Princeton had opened the season unbeaten in 10 games, but lost both games last weekend to Dartmouth and Harvard. The task will not be easy as the Tigers will face the nation's top-ranked team in its own building.
Princeton was 8-0-2 overall and 8-0-1 in league play before suffering defeats to Darmouth and Harvard. The losses dropped Princeton into third in the ECACHL standings, just a point behind both Harvard and Dartmouth. Princeton is seven points ahead of a fourth-place tie between Colgate and St. Lawrence.
The losses dropped the Tigers two spots in one poll and one spot in the other as Princeton is ranked ninth in the USA Today Poll and 10th in the uscho.com poll. Princeton's opponent this weekend, Mercyhurst, climbed to No. 1 in both polls this week after earning wins over both Boston College and New Hampshire, ranked ninth and third respectively at the time.
The Tigers started strong in both games last weekend but failed to take advantage of their early opportunities, outshooting both teams in the first period. After falling behind Dartmouth early, goals from Annie Greenwood and Kim Pearce knotted the game, before Dartmouth regained the lead in a 6-3 win. A day later, the Tigers outshot Harvard 15-9 in the first period, but fell behind in the second in a 5-0 loss.
Princeton has Mercyhurst on the schedule for the seventh-straight season. The teams have alternated hosting two-game series' since the 2000-01 season. Princeton is 7-4-1 all-time against Mercyhurst and holds a 4-1-1 record when playing at Mercyhurst. Last season the teams played two very tight games at Baker Rink. In the opener, Mecyhurst's Valerie Chouinard scored the game winner with a second remaining in regulation for a 3-2 Mercyhurst win. A day later the Tigers added the dramatics, winning a back-and-forth contest 4-3 in overtime on a goal from Greenwood.
Mercyhurst is 12-1-1 overall this season with its only loss coming on the road at St. Lawrence, in a series which it split with the Saints. The Lakers have shared five common opponents with Princeton, sweeping Dartmouth and Colgate, earning a win and a tie against Clarkson, splitting at St. Lawrence and earning a win against Boston College. Mercyhurst is yet to have played a league game.
Princeton continues the non-conference portion of its schedule next weekend at Wayne State. The Tigers return to Baker Rink on Dec. 30 against Ohio State.
