Tigers Run Unbeaten Streak to Six With Win at Yale
November 05, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team ran its season-opening unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-1 win at Yale on Sunday afternoon. Junior Lizzie Keady had a goal and an assist in the win as Princeton improved to 4-0-2 overall this season.
A day after edging Brown 2-1, the Tigers held on through a barrage of Yale shots early in the period, and then took a 1-0 lead with 1:55 left in the period. Sophomore goaltender Kristen Young made 11 saves on 11 shots in the period, while junior Marykate Oakley provided the scoring with a power-play goal, her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Senior Kim Pearce had an assist on the goal. That assist was Pearce's 100th point at Princeton.
Shots were balanced in the second period, with each team taking seven, but it was Princeton that extended its lead with a pair of goals. Junior Brittany Salmon made the score 2-0 1:55 into the second period with her fourth goal of the season and her third goal of the weekend after scoring both Tiger goals at Brown. Keady assisted on the goal.
Yale cut the lead in half just over three minutes later when Denise Soesilo found the back of the net. The margin stood at one goal for most of the period, by Keady gave the Tigers a bit of breathing room when she scored her second goal of the season at 18:35 of the second period. The goal was assisted by freshman Melanie Wallace.
Salmon's goal stood up as the game winner since Yale was unable to crack Young the rest of the way as Princeton picked up the win. Yale outshot Princeton 7-6 in the third period and 25-18 for the game, but Young's 24 saves stood up as she improved to 3-0-2 on the season. Shivon Zilis took the loss, allowing three goals on 12 shots. Ashley LaHue played the third period for Yale, stopping all six shots she faced.
Princeton is now 4-0-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. The win lifted Princeton above Dartmouth and St. Lawrence into first place in the ECACHL standings with nine points.
Princeton is back in action next Friday night at home with the Tigers host Union at 7 p.m.
