November 07, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON – The Princeton field hockey team wrapped up its second consecutive Ivy League title win a win over Harvard on Oct. 21. Today Princeton picked up the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year awards for the second straight year, with junior Paige Schmidt being named Player of the Year and freshman Kaitlyn Perrelle being named the Rookie of the Year.
Schmidt takes home the Ivy League Player of the Year award for the second straight season. Schmidt scored five goals and had seven assists overall this season and was a unanimous selection to the first team by the eight Ivy League coaches. The junior started all 17 games for the Tigers and led the League in shots, totaling 66.
She becomes the fourth Princetonian to win two Player of the Year awards, joining Liz Fagan (1993, 1994), Amy MacFarlane (1996, 1997) and Ilvy Friebe (2001, 2002). Twelve Princetonians have won the award a total of 16 times. The League's Player of the Year has come from Princeton in six of the last seven, and 12 of the last 14 seasons.
Perrelle was named Rookie of the Year as well as to the second team as part of the Princeton defense that earned its second straight League title. Perrelle started all 17 games on a Princeton defense that limited the Ivy League to just six goals against in seven games. She was named to the second-team All-Ivy list along with her Rookie of the Year acknowledgement. She becomes Princeton's 14th Ivy League Rookie of the Year.
Joining Schmidt as a first-team All-Ivy selection were three other Tigers – senior Allison Nemeth and sophomore Holly McGarvie and Sarah Reinprecht. Nemeth, the 2003 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, appeared in 16 games in goal and was 10-6 overall and 7-0 in the Ivy League. She had a 1.71 goals-against average and a .765 save percentage as well as three shutouts.
McGarvie led the Tigers in scoring as a sophomore with nine goals and two assists for 20 points. She scored four game winners and tied a Princeton single-game record when she had nine points in a win at Cornell. Fifteen of her 20 points came in League games.
Reinprecht earned first team honors after claiming the Rookie of the Year award and second team honors as a freshman. In addition to helping to anchor the Tiger defense, Reinprecht helped the Tigers at the offensive send as well, totaling four goals and three assists.
In addition to Perrelle, junior Nicole Ng earned second-team All-Ivy recognition. Ng had a goal and two assists on the season and provided a steady presence for Princeton in the midfield all season long.
Princeton awaits tonight's NCAA selection show to find out who it will play in the NCAA tournament. The selection show will take place tonight at 7 p.m. on CSTV.
