Women's Hockey Falls at No. 1 Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. -- Top-ranked Mercyhurst broke open a tight game with two goals late in the second period to pull off a 6-1 win over the ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Freshman Melanie Wallace scored the lone Tiger goal.
Mercyhurst's Valerie Chouinard scored the lone goal of the first period while shorthanded. The Lakers made the score 2-0 midway through the second period on the power play from Meghan Agosta. Princeton cut the margin to 2-1 with a goal at 13:57 of the second period when freshman Melanie Wallace scored her third goal of the season. Senior Dina McCumber assisted on the goal along with freshman Stephanie Denino who picked up her first collegiate point.
Mercyhurst broke the game open with two goals in the final 2:20 of the period to take a 4-1 lead after two periods. Chouinard's second goal of the game made it 3-1 and Agosta second, a short hander with nine seconds left made it 4-1.
Mercyhurst added two late third period goals to reach the 6-1 final.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Kristen Young made 25 saves on 31 shots.
Princeton fell to 8-3-2 overall and dropped its third-straight game after opening the season unbeaten in 10 games. The Tigers close out the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
