Men's Swimming & Diving Falls 165-135 At Navy
December 10, 2006 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The upstart Navy Midshipmen men's swimming and diving team improved to 11-0 on the season with a home 165-135 victory over Princeton Sunday afternoon. Princeton fell to 3-3 with the loss, although it featured several individual highlights for the Orange and Black. Sophomore Robert Griest won two events while classmate Doug Lennox won one indivdual event and joined a victorious relay to close the meet.
Following a loss in the opening relay, Griest claimed the 800 free in 8:09.91. He followed that up later in the day with a win in the 400 free (3:57.07), giving him Princeton's only double of the day in a pair of individual events.
Navy took three straight events before 2006 All-America Meir Hasbani ignited a 1-2 Tiger finish in the 200 fly. He won the event in 2:03.07, edging out Dan Eckel's second-place time of 2:03.69. Navy built on its lead in the next three events, but Mike Carter came back to win the 100 free in 52.31 seconds.
Lennox helped Princeton to a strong finish in the meet with an individual win in the 100 fly (55.09 seconds), and he anchored the winning 400 free relay team. Joned by Carter, Jon Hartmann and Will Schaffer, Lennox capped a winning effort in a time of 3:29.00.
There were several strong second-place efforts in the meet. Diver Stuart Malcolm scored 344.32, but he fell to Kevin Teague in the 3-meter diving competition; those two will likely be among the favorites when they meet again at the 2007 EISL championships. Hartmann was edged out in the 200 free; his time of 1:53.54 was .03 off the winning time.
Princeton is off until January 13, when it competes at Columbia.
