PRINCETON - Brittany Salmon and Marykate Oakley both scored twice and Princeton outshot Harvard 49-16 in a 6-1 women's hockey victory Friday night in Baker Rink. The win pushes Princeton to second place in the ECAC and gives the Tigers a four-point lead on Crimson, which currently is the highest-ranked team outside of the top four.
Princeton controlled the game from whistle to whistle, outshooting the Crimson 16-1 in the first period and entering the intermission with a 1-0 lead. That goal game on a coast-to-coast performance from Salmon, who stole an ill-fated centering pass in her own defensive end, beat the final Crimson defender on the Harvard blueline and made her way in front of the crease, where she beat Crimson goaltender Brittany Martin at the 15:13 mark of the period.
While Harvard only had one shot in the period, it took a fantastic save from starter Roxanne Gaudiel to keep it out of the net. Kirsten Kester found herself with the puck alone in front of the net and fired a shot that Gaudiel reached up and snared gloveside to keep Harvard scoreless.
Princeton took 18 shots in the third period and scored three times, including two within the span of 42 seconds. The Tigers opened a 2-0 lead when Salmon found a rebound off a saved shot from teammate Heather Jackson and stuffed her ninth goal of the season home.
Oakley got the third goal in motion by taking the puck behind the net and centering a perfect feed for Greenwood, who scored her 19th goal of the season at the 9:06 mark of the period. Oakley then made sure Harvard had no momentum entering the third period when she took a lead pass from Sonja Novak and beat Martin with only 23 seconds remaining in the period. The Crimson battled for its best period in the third, but it wasn't enough to top Princeton in either shots (15-10) or goals (2-1). An unassisted goal from Oakley and a shorthanded goal by Alison Ralph clinched the rout, although Harvard's Jennifer Sifers ended Gaudiel's shutout bid with a nicely placed shot at the 17:09 mark of the final period.
Princeton was 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Crimson was 1-for-7, although Harvard also gave up the final shorthanded goal.
Princeton will welcome Dartmouth to Baker Rink Saturday at 4 p.m., which will help celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Admission is free.
