CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Princeton won seven individual scored events and also took the 4X800 relay event to end the meet on the way to victory over Yale and Harvard in the H-Y-P men's indoor track meet held at Harvard's Gordon Track Saturday.
The Tigers finished with 78 points in 16 scored events, seven better than second-place Yale. Harvard was third with 20 points.
A dominant win in the 4X800 meter relay to end the meet clinched it for the Tigers. Princeton's "A" team ran the 3,200 meters in 7:42.65, and the Tigers "B" team actually finished second.
Princeton got wins in the middle distances in both the 800 and 1,000-meter races. Mike Kowal's time of 1:56.66 in the 800 was good for a close victory over Yale's Matt Bordoni, while Eric Beights ran a 2:27 flat in the 1,000 for the win. Teammate Kurt Kuehne was just .16 behind Beights and finished second.
In the field events, Tigers won both the weight throw and the pole vault. Alex Pessala's toss of 18.20 meters won the weight throw and was nearly one meter better than the second-best throw, while Will Byrd's pole vault of 4.65 meters won that event. Tiger senior Kyle Whittaker was second in the pole vault.
Ray Lenihan and David Nightingale each continued strong indoor seasons with victories Saturday. Lenihan ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.09 for the second straight week to win that event, while Nightingale took the 3,000 meters in 8:07.14, with teammate Frank Macreery finishing third. Rich Stewart was also an event winner for Princeton in the 500 meters in 1:04.38.
