PRINCETON - The Princeton men's hockey team dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Union on Saturday night at Baker Rink. In a game where the lead changed hands four times, the Dutchmen scored late to force overtime and won in the extra session. The game was the fourth-straight to go to overtime for Princeton, which was led by freshman Brett Wilson's three points.
With the loss, Princeton fell to 9-16-2 on the season and 6-12-2 in the ECACHL, while Union moved to 16-12-6 overall and 9-7-4 in league play. The loss also relegated Princeton to the road for the first round of the ECACHL playoffs. Princeton, currently tied for 10th with Yale at 14 points, is a point behind ninth-place Quinnipiac.
Princeton opened the scoring in the game when junior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored off the rush at 14:10 of the first period. After receiving a pass from Wilson in his own end, Goeckner-Zoeller skated through the neutral zone and into the Union end. He then pulled up and set up the screen as Wilson and freshman Lee Jubinville went to the net and shot through a screen for his 14th goal of the season. Jubinville also assisted on the goal.
Union evened the score at time wound down in the period and the game went to the intermission tied at 1-1. Olivier Bouchard scored the goal at 19:39 with assists from Jonathan Poirer and Brendan Milnamow.
Union scored the game's next two goals to take a 3-1 lead in late in the second period, as Union controlled play for the period, outshooting Princeton 24-9 in the period. First at 2:00, Augie DiMarzo capped an end-to-end rush with a goal that came with four skaters aside. The Dutchmen made the lead 3-1 on Scott Wheeler's point shot through traffic at 16:04. DiMarzo and Jason Visser also assisted on the tally.
Union looked to take a 3-1 lead into the lockerrooms, but a late penalty gave Princeton a power play and the Tigers responded with a goal at 19:23 to make the score 3-2. The goal came from junior Kevin Westgarth who batted home a loose puck in front for his seventh goal of the season. Senior Brian Carthas and Wilson assisted on the goal.
Princeton withstood Union's second-period storm and went ahead with two power-play goals in the third period. The first came at 5:56 when Wilson scored his 11th of the year as he collected a clocked shot and shot it by Union netminder Kris Mayotte. Westgarth and senior Seamus Young assisted on the goal.
Princeton went ahead at 11:03 of the period on Goeckner-Zoeller's second tally of the night, which followed a strange series in the Union zone. Down a man already, Union's Jake Schawn was whistled for elbowing to give Princeton a two-man advantage. At the same time, Mayotte received a 10-minute misconduct and was forced to leave the ice for the locker room.
Union was forced to change goaltenders and Justin Mrazek was hardly warmed up when Goeckner-Zoeller put the first Mrazek faced by him to give Princeton the lead. Young and Carthas also assisted on the goal.
Princeton played with the lead from there until Union pulled Mrazek in favor of an extra-attacker and scored with 18:38 when Poirer was left alone in front. Torren Delfote assisted on the goal.
The game went to overtime and each teams had a power-play chance before Sean Streich scored the game-winner from the point through traffic with 47 second left in overtime. Milnamow and Bouchard assisted on it.
Princeton senior goaltender Eric Leroux made 43 saves in the loss, while Mayotte, who returned to the Union net in overtime, made 22 saves for the win.
Princeton returns to action next Friday night at Brown.
