CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - On Saturday evening at Harvard's Lavietes Pavilion, the 2005-06 edition of the Princeton women's basketball team (18-6, 9-2 Ivy) did something that none of its predecessors could do in 23 chances, sweeping the Harvard-Dartmouth trip. The 69-57 win over Harvard (10-14, 6-5) keeps Princeton's postseason hopes alive and well as the Tigers will arrive back at Old Nassau no more than a game and a half behind Brown and at least even with Dartmouth in the Ivy standings.
Sophomore forward Meagan Cowher and senior center Becky Brown had double-digit nights for the second straight game, each scoring 16 points. Cowher came within one rebound of a double-double, pulling down a game-high nine boards. Junior forward Casey Lockwood added 10 points. For Harvard, Emily Tay dropped in 14 points and Laura Robinson 10.
Princeton had a 26-point lead at its largest margin and while Harvard made runs throughout the game, the edge never got smaller than 11 after that point. For the game, Princeton outshot Harvard 51.3 percent to 38.6 percent and outrebounded the Crimson 32-27, despite allowing the home team 12 second-chance boards. A night after holding Dartmouth, the nation's No. 1 three-point shooting team, to 1 for 7 from distance, the Tigers didn't let Harvard tear into the lead via the three either. The Crimson went 2 for 9 from beyond the arc.
That 26-point lead came when Princeton was up 30-4 with seven minutes left in the first half. But the Tigers were kept off the board for over three minutes, in which time Harvard rattled off 10 straight points to cut the deficit to 30-14 four minutes short of the break. The Tigers took a 37-23 lead into the locker room. Princeton was able to gain such a large lead by nailing 13 of its first 16 shots. Harvard, meanwhile, missed 14 of its first 16 attempts from the field. For the half, Princeton shot 64 percent to 34.5 percent for the Crimson. Hitting 5 of 7 from three-point range also gave Princeton a boost. That was the difference in a half that saw each team make 12 turnovers and Princeton only outrebound Harvard 15-14. For the game, Harvard benefitted from 21 Princeton turnovers while committing 18 of its own.
The tipoff for Friday's game at Jadwin Gym against Brown is scheduled for 7 p.m. A win there would pull Princeton to within a half game of the Bears, a game Princeton would have the chance make up on Brown when it finishes the season against Penn on Mar. 7.
