CANTON, N.Y. - No. 3 St. Lawrence jumped to an early lead and held off the eighth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team late to earn a 3-1 win on Friday night at Appleton Arena. The Saints scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game in the win. Freshman Annie Greenwood scored Princeton's goal.
The Saints wasted very little time in letting their offense go to work, as Sabrina Harbec won a battle in the neutral zone for a loose puck, then tipped it ahead to Carson Duggan. Duggan went in on a breakaway and wristed a shot to the top-right corner to give St. Lawrence the lead 27 seconds into the game.
St. Lawrence continued to pressure and added a goal seven minutes later, as Marianna Locke scored her eighth power -play goal of the season at 7:23 to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. On the power play, Harbec snapped a shot on net from the left circle. Although Princeton senior netminder Roxanne Gaudiel made the initial save, she was unable to control the rebound, which landed right on, Locke's stick and she slipped it into the goal.
Princeton answered back in the second period with the only goal in the period. With Duggan whistled for goaltender interference, the Tigers scored on the power play. Junior Dina McCumber fed a pass to sophomore Marykate Oakley on the left. Oakley then tossed a pass through the crease to a wide-open Greenwood, who notched her 17th goal of the season when she tipped the pass into the right side of the net. The third period was tight checking as only 11 combined shots were taken. Princeton pressured with three power-play chances but could not score and Lisa Batchelor sealed the win with an empty netter with seven seconds left.
Meaghan Guckian finished the night with 19 saves on 20 shots to improve to 9-1-2 on the season. Gaudiel closed with 24 saves on 26 shots, but took the loss, falling to 11-5-4.
