Princeton women's hockey alum Nikola Holmes '03, a native of Minnesota, but the daughter of a German mother, will compete for Germany when the Olympic Winter Games begin this weekend in Italy. Holmes has been living and playing hockey in Germany since graduating from Princeton.
Holmes captained the 2002-03 Tiger squad that set a program record for wins in a season (20) and winning percentage (.677). The team also advanced to the ECAC semifinals. Holmes ranked third on that team in scoring with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points. She completed her career with 33 goals and 42 assists for 75 points in 111 games wearing the Orange and Black.
Holmes is the lone Princeton representative competing at the 2006 Olympic Games. She has competed for the German National team in two international tournaments this season, with the team placing fourth at the Four Nations Cup in October and fourth in Air Canada Cup in early January.
The German team is seeded sixth in eight-team field and will play in Group B with the United States (2), Finland (3) and Switzerland (7). The team's first game is scheduled for this Saturday against Finland. The team will play each team in its group once prior to the play-off round. All three of the team's preliminary round games will be televised live in the United States.
