PRINCETON - The 2006 Ivy League champion Princeton women's hockey team was well represented when the league announced it major award recipients and All-Ivy teams on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Kim Pearce became Princeton's sixth Ivy League Player of the Year, while freshman Annie Greenwood earned Princeton's fifth Rookie of the Year Award.
It was a pretty good week for Pearce, who on Friday was named as one of 10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given annually to the most outstanding player in women's collegiate ice hockey. On Saturday her Tigers beat Yale to take their first outright Ivy League championship since 1992. It was Princeton's sixth overall league title.
And on Wednesday she was named the 2005-06 Ivy League Women's Ice Hockey Player of the Year in a vote by the League's six coaches.
Pearce was second in the Ivy League in scoring this season at 1.24 points per game, and led the league with 26 assists. She tied for third in power-play points with 14 and tied for sixth in game-winning goals with three. She was also named ECAC Hockey League Player of the Week on two occasions.
Teammate Annie Greenwood was the unanimous choice as the 2005-06 Rookie of the Year. Greenwood finished the season fourth in the League in scoring at 1.07 points per game, finishing the regular season with seven assists and a league-best 24 goals. She also tied for the league lead with five game-winning goals and was twice named ECACHL Rookie of the Week.
Pearce and Greenwood's awards marked the second time that Princeton teammates swept the Ivy League's major awards. The first time occurred in 1984 when Syrena Carlbom was the Player of the Year and Gina Pietrangelo was the Rookie of the Year. Pearce also became the second Tiger to be named a league Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year. Pietrangelo was the other. Pearce led a trio of Tigers that were named first-team All-Ivy. Junior Laura Watt, the only unanimous selection on the first team, placed second in the league in scoring by a defenseman with 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists), and goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel was the coaches' pick out of a deep well of talented netminders.
Gaudiel led Ivy goaltenders in all main statistical categories during the season, including save percentage (.928), winning percentage (.731 at 17-5-4) and goals-against average (1.54, or half a goal better than her nearest competitor). Gaudiel was a three-time ECACHL Goaltender of the Week. She was becomes a two-time first-team All-Ivy as she was the first team's goaltender after the 2004-05 season.
Two more Tigers were named the league's second team. They were sophomore Marykate Oakley and junior Dina McCumber. Oakley led the Ivy League in scoring in league games with 15 points. McCumber ranked seventh in league scoring and led all league defenseman in points against league teams.
Princeton will be in action this weekend when it hosts Colgate in a best-of-three quarterfinal series at Baker Rink. The games will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday night, and at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday if necessary. Admission to the games is free of charge.
