REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The Princeton women's lightweight crew is a work in progress, a blend of youth and experience that needs races together to blend into what head coach Paul Rassam believes can be a tough squad by Eastern Sprints. Princeton got three races this weekend at the Windermere Classic and won two of them, including a Sunday showdown against Loyola Marymount.
The weekend started off with a disappointing loss to Radcliffe. The Tigers jumped out to a lead in the first 1000 meters, but the Crimson was simply too strong down the stretch. Radcliffe opened its season by winning in 8:09.9, well ahead of Princeton's time of 8:16.1.
The Tigers were well aware that they would see Radcliffe a few more times this season, and they spent the rest of the weekend improving their own team. Saturday concluded with a victory over an improving Stanford squad, as Princeton left the Cardinal early and never looked back. The Tigers' first win came in 7:36.1, while Stanford took second in 8:06.7.
Princeton raced one time on Sunday, topping Loyola Marymount by 31 seconds. The Tigers finished in 6:52.7, while their opponents finished in 7:23.7.
Rassam was also pleased with the performance of the second varsity crew. That boat handled the very rough headwind conditions well on Saturday in a loss to Stanford, and it came back Sunday to beat Sonoma State's Open Varsity 8 in a fast time of 7:04.
Princeton will race Bucknell next weekend at home. It will be the only Saturday of the spring where all four teams will race at home.
