SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Princeton baseball team jumped to a big lead in the middle innings, then held on late for an 8-6 win at Seton Hall on Tuesday afternoon at Carroll Field. Sophomore Micah Kaplan and freshman Derek Beckman each had two hits and drove in two as Princeton ran its win streak to six games. Freshman Brad Gemberling allowed an earned run in six innings to pick up his first career win.
Princeton's first six runs all came in the fourth inning as Princeton broke a scoreless tie and went ahead for good. Two of the runs were earned in the inning as the Tigers used two hits and three Seton Hall errors to take control of the game. Kaplan and Beckman each had two-run hits in the inning.
The inning started with senior Andrew Salini being hit by a pitch. He went to second on a passed ball and scored when senior Zach Wendkos reached on a throwing error by the Pirate third baseman. Junior Sal Iacono walked to put two on and senior Stephen Wendell then sac bunted him to third, but also reached base as the throw drew the first baseman off the bag, and that loaded the bases for Kaplan, whose single scored two runs and put Princeton ahead 3-0. With Wendell and Kaplan on, sophomore Spencer Lucian sacrificed him to third, but also reached on a throwing error, which set up Beckman's two-run double to left center that scored Wendell and Kaplan. The final run of the inning scored on junior Aaron Prince's RBI-groundout. Seton Hall came back with two runs in the fourth as Dan McDonald reached on an error and Chris Affinito homered to right center. Both runs were unearned.
Princeton stretched its lead with another run in the sixth inning. With one out, Beckman reached on an infield single and after stealing second he scored when freshman Dan Degeorge placed a double down the right field line, but Seton Hall got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as Affinito doubled home McDonald. The Pirates also chipped another run off the lead in the seventh inning when Mike Young hit a lead off double and scored on a double-play ball.
Seton Hall continued to chip away at the lead and made the score 7-6 with two runs in the eighth inning. McDonald reached on an error to begin the inning and after stealing second, scored on a Brendan Cohen single. Cohen would then eventually score on an RBI-groundout from Casey Hines. After another single, sophomore closer Steven Miller came on and got an inning-ending strikeout to preserve the lead.
With Seton Hall clawing back, the Tigers picked up an important insurance run in the ninth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Prince was plunked with a one-out pitch and after stealing second, he went to third on a fly out and scored on a Wendkos single.
Seton Hall came up in the ninth with one last chance, and loaded the bases with two outs, but Miller was able to get Affinito to fly out to right field and seal the win for Princeton.
Gemberling picked up the win after allowing three runs, only one earned, on five hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two. Sophomore Reid Peyton worked relief and Miller notched his third save of the season.
The win moves Princeton to 10-19-1 on the season. The Tigers resume play on Saturday at home against Penn. The doubleheader begins at 12 noon.
