Tigers Fall at St. John's 17-5

JAMAICA, N.Y. - After scoring four runs on five hits to takea 4-2 lead in the second inning, the Princeton baseball team managed just three hits over the final seven innings as St. John's posted a 17-5 win on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at St. John's. Sophomore Spencer Lucian had two hits and drove in a run in the game.
St. John's jumped on the scoreboard early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sam DeLuca singled up the middle with two outs and after stealing second scored ont he combination of a Chris Joachim single and a throwing error. Joachim, who wound up at second on the play, scored on a single by Anthony Smith.
Princeton answered back immediately by batting around in the second inning and pushing four runs across the plate. Senior Andrew Salini began the inning with an 11-pitch at bat that he ended with a single to shallow center field. Salini stole second and the scored when senior Stephen Wendell ripped a double down the left field line. Freshman Adrian Turnham continued the inning with a single to the right side that put runners on the corners for Lucian, who scored one with a double to left field. Senior Matthew Becker walked to load the bases for freshman Derek Beckman who hit into a fielder's choice that scored Turnham. With runners now on the corner, freshman Dan Degeorge singled through the right side on a hit and run to score Lucian as Princeton used five hits, a walk and a fielder's choice to plate four runs. St. John's quickly regained the lead with a three-run second inning. Gil Zayas drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wind-aided triple hit by Eddie Schultz that was headed to center off the bat, but wound up in right field by the time it landed. After a walk, Schultz scored after Will Vogl flew out to right field. Schultz had decided not to tag up on the play but ended up scoring on an error as the wind grabbed hold of the throw into the infield. The final run of the inning was scored when DeLuca singled home Jarod Hickle as the Red Storm took a 5-4 lead through two innings.
The Red Storm extended its lead in the fourth inning with three runs on three hits. Schultz, Hickle and Vogl led off the inning with three straight hits. Hickle's single scored Schultz and Hickle and Vogl both scored on back-to-back sac flies.
St. John's added more to its lead as the rain started to fall in the fifth inning with four more runs scored on four singles and two walks to push the score to 12-4. Hickle drove in one with a single and DeLuca plated two runs with a single to shallow right field.
Five more runs in the sixth inning made the score 17-4 in favor of St. John's as the Red Storm used three hits, a walk and two Princeton errors in the field to prodice the runs. Hickle had a two-run double in the inning as his fly ball dropped in the outfield.
Princeton added a final run in the ninth inning as Beckman hit a stand-up double to right center. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a DeGeorge sac fly.
Neither starting pitcher made it past the second inning of the game as the team's combined for nine runs through two innings. St. John's reliever Luis Monell came on with two on and two outs in the second inning and was able to get out of the inning without letting one of his inherited runners to score. He went on to hold Princeton hitless through the sixth inning to earn the win. Freshman starter Brad Gemberling took the loss for Princeton as he allowed five runs on five hits in two innings.
The loss drops Princeton to 12-22-1 on the season. The Tigers resume play on Friday afternoon at Cornell for the first of two doubleheaders with the Big Red. The teams also play on Sunday afternoon in Princeton. The series will determine the winner of the Gehrig Division as Princeton currently holds a one-game lead in the divisional standings. Both Penn and Columbia have been eliminated from the division race.
