PHILADELPHIA - Princeton's 4X400 relay team of Brian Shields, Bill Foran, Ian Thomson and Rich Stewart finished a close second in the Heptagonal 4X400 race at the Penn Relays Friday afternoon at Franklin Field.
The Tigers finished the exciting race in 3:12.74, less than two-tenths of a second behind the hosts from Penn. Princeton easily defeated Brown, Cornell and Dartmouth in what could be a preview of the same race next week at Heptagonals.
In the pole vault earlier in the afternoon, two Princeton athletes finished in the top seven of the Eastern event. Kyle Whitaker's best leap of 4.75 meters (15 feet, seven inches) was good for third place, while Will Byrd's jump of 15 feet, one inch (4.60 meters) earned seventh place.
Alex Willis competed in the Eastern high jump event Friday morning for Princeton. He cleared two meters (6 feet, 6 3/4 inches) to finish in 12th place.
Princeton athletes will compete in four events Saturday at the Penn Relays, including the hammer throw in the field and two relays (4Xmile and 4X800) on the track.
