Ray Lenihan, in the 110-meter hurdles, and Andrew Park, in the pole vault, led the way for the Princeton track teams as they competed along with 13 other schools at the ninth annual Sam Howell Invitational Saturday afternoon at Weaver Stadium.
Lenihan won the 110 hurdles impressively in a time of 14.68, just edging Monmouth's Matt Dahms for the victory. In the pole vault, Park was the only competitor to jump higher than 16 feet. His winning vault was 16 feet, 2 3/4 inches (4.95 meters).
On the women's side, Princeton had two second-place finishers on the track on Saturday. Caroline Mullen was second in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:37.43, just behind race winner Nana Sang-Bender of Syracuse. In the 400 meters, Leanne Bellar was one of just three runners to run the lap in under a minute, finishing second behind Columbia's Erika Moses in a time of 57.10.
On the men's side, Princeton also had a second-place finisher in the 1,500 in David Nightingale, who was second in 3:57.09 and followed by teammate Michael Maag in third. Ian Thomson was a close second in the 400 meters, while Bill Foran ran an 11.01 to finish second in the 100 meters. Brian Shields' time of 22.21 was second in the 200 meters and just one-hundreth off the winning time, while Derek Davis was second in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
