Men's Track in First Place After First Day at Ivy League Heptagonals

PHILADELPHIA - Princeton won three events and qualified nine athletes for Sunday's finals on the way to the first day lead at the 2006 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Penn's Franklin Field.
The Tigers have 60 points with six of 21 events complete, well ahead of second-place Brown (46.5) and third-place Cornell (22). Host Penn is in fourth place after the first day.
In the field events, the Tigers dominated in both the pole vault and the hammer throw on Saturday. In the hammer, Alex Pessala had another big win with a toss of 191 feet, 11 inches, and teammate Ken Stringer had a throw of 184 feet, seven inches to give Princeton the first two places in that event. In the vault, Andrew Park tied the Ivy season-best mark with a leap of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches, while Kyle Whitaker's vault of 16 feet, 3/4 inch was good for third place.
Princeton also won the final event of the day when Frank Macreery broke away from the pack about halfway through the race on the way to a victory in the 10,000 meters. Macreery's winning time was 30:27.01.
On Sunday, Princeton will have finalists in the 100 and 200 meter runs, as both Brian Shields and Bill Foran qualified for each event final. Rich Stewart and Ian Thomson will run in the 400 final, while Kurt Kuehne will participate in the 800 final. Jim O'Toole and Rob Grote will run in the 1,500 meters on Sunday for Princeton.
In other action on Saturday, Derek Davis was a second-place finisher for Princeton in the long jump, leaping 23 feet, 7 1/4 inches, while Josh Probst was third in the javelin with a toss of more than 216 feet. In the decathlon, Will Byrd and Duane Hynes hold down the third and fourth positions after the first five events.
