PHILADELPHIA - The Princeton men's track team got another winning performance from senior distance runner Frank Macreery and terrific efforts from both Will Byrad and Duane Hynes in the decathlon but fell just short of Cornell at the 2006 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday afternoon at Franklin Field.
The Tigers finished with 114 points, well clear of third-place Brown, who finished with 98 1/2 points. The Big Red, who won the outdoor championships for the fourth straight year, finished with 129 points.
Macreery, who won the 10,000-meter race late Saturday, concluded a terrific weekend on the track by winning the 5,000 meters on Sunday. Macreery established a lead a little more than halfway through the 12 1/2-lap race and went on to defeat Dartmouth's Ben True, the 1,500-meter Heps champion, by nearly four seconds. Princeton dominated the race overall, taking four of the top six places in the event.
In the decathlon, Princeton took two of three places behind winner Kyle Calvo of Penn, who broke the 7,200-point mark with a 5:03.58 in the concluding 1,500 meters. Byrd was a strong second with 6,849 points, while Hynes nearly got third before settling for fourth place with 6,754 points.
In the steeplechase, Brian Sharkey was a fifth-place finisher for Princeton, running the 3,000 meters in 9:14.92. Rich Stewart also finished fifth for the Tigers, in the 400 meters, with a time of 48.14 seconds.
Columbia's Erison Hurtault, the winner of that 400-meter race, was named the Most Outstanding Performer at the meet. His impressive time of 46.12 seconds in that race was the best-ever time for an Ivy League athlete in the event. In the 200 meters, Princeton's Brian Shields and Bill Foran finished third and fourth, respectively, in times of 21.50 and 21.86 seconds. Dartmouth's Fatih Stanley won both the 100 and 200 meter races on Sunday. Shields finished fifth in the 100 meters for Princeton.
Princeton will host the 2006 ECAC/IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships this upcoming weekend at Weaver Stadium.
