Field Hockey Drops Season Opener at Richmond
September 02, 2006 | Field Hockey
Princeton opened the scoring just 2:44 into the game when sophomore Leah Hoagland scored her first goal of the season. Hoagland scored off the rebound of a shot by sophomore Katie Kinzer. Play bounced back-and-forth before the Tigers made it 2-0 when freshman Tina Bortz scored an unassisted goal one-on-one with Richmond goalkeeper Becca Weaver.
Down by two, Richmond jumped back into the game 31 seconds later when Heather Wrublesky scored a goal on a deflection in front of the net. Four minutes later Megan Thompson made it 2-2, which is where the half ended.
The score remained tied through the first 23 minutes of the second half before Richmond made the score 3-2 on Shannon Taylor's third goal of the season.
Richmond's lead lasted three minutes before Bortz scored her second goal of the game, finding the ball in traffic in front of the goal and scoring. That tied the game at 3-3 in the 60th minute.
That set things up for Richmond's Erin Arthur to score the game-winning goal on a penalty corner at 64:16 and helped lift Richmond to the win.
Princeton senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made five saves in the loss, while Weaver made three saves for Richmond. The Spiders outshot Princeton 12-7 in the game.
Princeton returns to action on Wednesday night at Penn State.
