September 30, 2006 | Field Hockey
ITHACA, N.Y. -- After playing nearly 55 scoreless minutes on Saturday afternoon against Cornell, the Princeton field hockey team scored six goals in 15 minutes to post a 6-0 win. Sophomore Holly McGarvie scored four goals and had an assist to lead Princeton to the win.
McGarvie's nine points ties a Princeton record for points in a game. She now shares the record with Amy MacFarlane who also had four goals and an assist for nine points in an 11-1 win at La Salle in 1996.
The two teams played a fairly even first half with Cornell outshooting the Tigers 4-3 and Princeton have 4 corners to Cornell's 1. Princeton turned on the offense in the second half though, firing 15 shots on the Cornell cage and converting on six of them.
McGarvie broke the scoreless tie at 54:48 with her first collegiate goal, and earned an assist two minutes later when she set up sophomore Katie Kinzer's team-leading fifth goal of the season. The McGarvie goal came on a rebound while Kinzer's was a deflection of the Cornell goalkeeper after McGarvie's hard shot.
Sophomore Sarah Reinprecht also scored her first collegiate goal of the season. Her goal came on a penalty corner as junior Micaela Vie Brock played the ball directly to Reinprecht, who fired the ball for the goal. The assist was Vie Brock's team-leading third assist of the season.
McGarvie closed out the scoring with three straight unassisted goals in the final six minutes of the game. McGarvie led the team with eight shots in the game, and seven of them were on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made five saves to record the shutout for the Tigers, while Lizzie Goldblatt made 10 saves in the loss.
Princeton moved to 5-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Ivy League with the win. The Tigers are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at home against Monmouth,
