A Perfect 10; Volleyball Stays Unbeaten, Opens Ivy Season With Key Win
September 30, 2006 | Women's Volleyball
With the momentum of a nine-match win streak to open its season, the 2006 Princeton women's volleyball team opened the Ivy League portion of its schedule in style Saturday night with a 3-1 win over Penn at the Palestra. The Tigers, who will make their home debut Sunday at 2 p.m., improved to 10-0 with the victory.
Defending Ivy League Rookie of the Year Parker Henritze led all players with 19 kills and 17 digs, while Sheena Donohue added a double-double of her own (12/13) in her first Ivy League match. Former Ivy Player of the Week Lindsay Ensign killed 13 balls and recorded a .379 attack percentage, the best for any player with double-digit kills. As a team, Princeton held Penn to an .087 attack percentage and outdug Penn 77-66.
Princeton claimed the match with game scores of 30-32, 30-16, 30-17 and 31-29.
The Tigers showed poise by fighting off a disappointing loss in the opening game. Despite grabbing a big early lead, Princeton's error-plagued hitting allowed the Quakers to claw their way back into the game. The final two of Princeton's 10 errors would give Penn the 32-30 win and threatened to halt that momentum Princeton had built throughout September.
Then came game two, and back came the momentum. Over the next two games, Princeton would kill 29 balls and make only seven errors. The Tigers built another big lead in the fourth game, but the gritty Penn squad rallied again. This time, Princeton wouldn't allow the game to slip away, and a final kill by sophomore middle Jessica Hoffmann gave Princeton the 31-29 win and the match victory.
Sunday's showdown with Juniata will feature two teams with perfect records. Juniata, a Division III power, will come to Dillon Gym with a 20-0 record.
