Women's Hockey Travels to Rensselaer and Union
January 12, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team travels to New York's Capital Region this weekend to play its second and third games in a six-day span against Rensselaer and Union. The games are Princeton's last games before a three-week layoff during final exams.
Princeton returned to its winning ways on Tuesday night by skating past travel-partner Quinnipiac 6-1 at Baker Rink. Five Tigers scored goals in the game and eight tallied points as Princeton scored the games first four goals and never looked back. Senior Kim Pearce led the charge with four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Laura Watt had three points, including the game-winning goal. Sophomore Kristen Young made 20 saves in the game, including stopping a penalty shot when the game was scoreless in the opening minutes of the first period.
The game snapped the Tigers brief two-game losing streak as Princeton was swept last weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth. Princeton is 3-3 in its last six games and looks to continue its winning ways against Rensselaer and Union, teams the Tigers defeated already this season at home. Princeton is currently 11-8-2 overall and 9-4-1 in the ECAC Hockey League to rank third.
Princeton holds a five-point lead over a fourth-place tie in the standings between Colgate and St. Lawrence. Both teams have 14 points this season to Princeton's 19, but have four games in hand on the Tigers, which will be made up in the next two weeks during Princeton's layoff during exams.
Princeton swept a series with Union and Rensselaer earlier this season as part of the Tigers 10-game season-opening unbeaten streak. Princeton skated by Union 9-2 on Nov. 10 as the Tigers scored six goals in the final 24 minutes to break open a close game until that point. Junior Lizzie Keady had four points in the game and four other Tigers added three points. Freshman Brittany Parisi earned the win with 15 saves.
A day later the Tigers jumped to a 3-1 lead over Rensselaer, then held on in the third as the Engineers moved back within a goal in a 3-2 Princeton win. Pearce, Keady and junior Marykate Oakley scored in the Tiger win and Young made 10 saves in goal.
Rensselaer is currently occupies the eighth spot in the ECACHL standings while Union sits in 12th. RPI is 8-12-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the league, while Union is 4-14-0 overall and 0-10-0 in league play.
Princeton returns from the exam break on Feb. 2 when Brown visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
