Women's Hockey Looks to Gain Ground This Weekend Against Brown and Yale
January 31, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team returns from its exam break with just three weekends remaining in the 2006-07 regular season. Princeton currently sits three points out of the final home-ice playoff spot and will look to make up some of that ground this weekend as Ivy rivals Brown and Yale visit Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton has been idle for the last three weeks since splitting a league series at Rensselaer and Union on Jan. 13 and 14. Princeton fell behind to Rensselaer 2-0 early in the second period in an eventual 5-3 loss. Princeton evened the score at 3-3 early in the third period on junior Marykate Oakley's 11th goal of the season but a late RPI goal and an empty-netter sealed the win for the Engineers. A day later, the Tigers rebounded with a 5-0 blanking of Union. Oakley scored twice in the win while senior Kate Hession added two assists and sophomore Kristen Young earned the shutout.
The win moved Princeton to 12-9-2 overall and 10-5-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. The Tigers remained in third place following that weekend, but as other league teams made up the games Princeton had in hand, the Tigers dropped to fifth in the standings following last weekend's league slate. Dartmouth currently sits atop the ECACHL standings with 29 points. Colgate and Harvard are tied for second with 25 points and St. Lawrence in fourth with 24. Princeton sits fifth with 21 points, and has a four-point buffer on sixth-place Rensselaer. Of the team's in the top-four, Colgate faces the toughest schedule, still having games against Dartmouth, Harvard, St. Lawrence and Princeton on its schedule.
Princeton swept a series at Brown and Yale earlier this season as part of the Tigers 10-game season-opening unbeaten streak. Princeton edged Brown 2-1 on the strength of two goals from junior Brittany Salmon and 12 saves from freshman Brittany Parisi. A day later, the Tigers downed Yale 3-1 with help from junior Lizzie Keady's two-point performance and 24 saves from Young.
Brown is currently 7-13-2 overall and 4-11-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. After a 1-11-1 start to the season, the Bears are 6-2-1 in their last nine games, including two straight wins entering the weekend. Brown is currently ninth in the league standings, four points behind Clarkson for the final playoff spot. The Tigers are 28-27-1 all-time against Brown in a series that began in 1980. Princeton is 13-11 against Brown at home including a 3-2 win late last season.
Yale is currently 12-10-1 overall and 7-8-1 in the ECACHL. Yale split a non-league series last weekend, edging Niagara but falling to top-ranked Mercyhurst. The Bulldogs are seventh in the league standings. Princeton is 47-8-2 all-time against Yale and is 25-4 on home ice. Princeton shut out Yale 3-0 in the team's regular-season finale last year at Baker Rink.
Princeton visits Clarkson and fourth-ranked St. Lawrence next weekend, then closes out the regular season Feb. 16 and 17 at home against Colgate and Cornell.
