Tigers Fall To Penn State, 5-2, In ECAC Invitational Championship Match
October 01, 2007 | Men's Tennis
The Princeton men's tennis team won the doubles point against top-seeded Penn State, but the Nittany Lions then responded at the top of the singles lineup to defeat the No. 3 seed Tigers 5-2 in the championship match of the ECAC Division I Invitational at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Monday morning.
The Tigers were playing without No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles player Peter Capkovic but took the lead early with an exciting doubles victory.
First, at No. 3 doubles, Ilya Trubov and Ryan Kim took two early breaks and a 4-0 lead before disposing of Penn State's Brendan Lynch and Ryan Gormley by an 8-2 score. Then, in the decider at No. 1, Princeton would break at 6-6 and then use Alex Krueger-Wyman's serve to close out the match 8-6, giving Krueger-Wyman and George Carpeni a victory over the No. 36 team in the nation in PSU's Michael James and Adam Slagter.
PSU would respond in singles, however, with James, the nation's No. 35-ranked singles player, defeating Carpeni in straight sets at No. 1 and Slagter getting past Krueger-Wyman by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 2.
Kim wouldn't let the Tigers lose without a fight, however, taking his match at No. 4 with Eddie Bourchier to a third set with the Tigers down 3-1 in the team match. After his impressive second-set 6-1 victory, Kim fell in a tough third set to Bourchier by a score of 6-3 and the Lions clinched the match.
The Tigers got a singles victory at No. 5, when Charlie Brosens split sets with James Dwyer and then saw Dwyer retire with leg cramps with the score 2-2 in the deciding set.
Princeton's Jonathan Leslie also took his match at No. 6 to a third set.
By winning the match, Penn State earned a team bid to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February.
Princeton will host the Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional at the Lenz Tennis Center Oct. 18-23.
