Elon Downs Tigers In Men's Tennis Season Opener, 4-3
January 28, 2008 | Men's Tennis
Princeton began its 2008 men's tennis season with a 4-3 loss to 53rd-ranked Elon Monday evening at Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The 71st-ranked Tigers won the doubles point to take the early lead, but the Phoenix proved to be strong at the top of their singles lineup.
The Tigers (0-1) won the doubles point thanks to the clinching effort of No. 1 team Alex Krueger-Wyman and George Carpeni, who won in a tiebreak after the teams split at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Krueger-Wyman and Carpeni are the No. 37-ranked team in Division I in the preseason.
Elon (1-1) clinched the match by winning each of the top four singles matches. The matches at Nos. 2 and 3 singles were particularly tight. At No. 3, Krueger-Wyman sent the match to a third set with Mason Schermerhorn before falling 6-3 in the third. At No. 2, Carpeni took the second set to a tiebreak against Oscar Podlewski but fell 8-6 in the breaker.
Princeton's singles wins came from Ryan Kim, who came back from a set down to win a proset with Philip Nemec at No. 5, and Charlie Brosens, who also came back at No. 6 to win a 12-10 proset with Chase Helpingstein at No. 6.
At No. 2 doubles, Peter Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic earned an 8-6 win over Nemec and Podlewski.
The Tigers return to Duke Tuesday evening to face the host Blue Devils, ranked No. 16 in the preseason. Match time is once again 6 p.m.
