Tigers Split Games on Final Day of SoCal Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. -- The 16th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team split two games on Sunday at the SoCal Tournament, hosted by UC Irvine. Princeton won the day's first game, besting Pomona-Pitzer 9-4, before falling to Redlands 12-11 in the second game.
With the results Princeton placed 14th in the 16-team field. Princeton is now 11-9 overall and returns to the East Coast for games next weekend against league foes Navy, Johns Hopkins and George Washington, plus a non-conference game against Air Force.
In the morning game, the Tigers fell behind 1-0 to Pomona-Pitzer, the nation's third-ranked Division III team. Princeton responded with four-straight goals over the next two quarters to take a lead and never look back. Princeton led 5-2 at the half on the strength of two goals from junior Brendan Colgan, and extended its lead through the second half of action. Junior Alex Edmunds finished the game with three goals scored to lead Princeton scorers.

The win set up a game with Redlands for 13th-place and the Leopards jumped on top of Princeton early, leading 3-1 after a quarter and 7-4 at the half. Each team scored four goals in the third and Redlands scored the first goal of the fourth to lead 12-8, then had to hold on as Princeton charged and got within one goal late, but the comeback came up just short and the nation's top-ranked Division III team topped Princeton. Sophomore Matt Hundall led the attack with three goals, while freshman Matt Hale and sophomore Gregor Horstmeyer had two goals each.
