Nine-Point Week Nets Diana Matheson Ivy and National Women's Soccer Honors
October 08, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- It was a record-breaking week for Diana Matheson, who played a major role in helping the Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-0 week and a perfect start to the Ivy season. Monday, the senior midfielder's efforts earned her Ivy League Player of the Week honors.
Against Rutgers last Tuesday, Matheson assisted on all four goals scored by Princeton players in a 5-1 win. She became the first Tiger, male or female, to have four assists in a game as Princeton also benefited from an own goal in the 5-1 win. The five goals scored and the four-goal margin were the largest for Princeton in the mostly annual series since 1981.
Also against the Scarlet Knights, Matheson passed Kathy Kobler '91 for the school's all-time career assist record, which now stands at 24.
Saturday at Brown, Matheson zoomed to the top of the Princeton points list on the season by scoring the first two Tiger goals and assisting on another in a 4-1 win. Matheson has played just three games since returning from representing Canada in the Women's World Cup in China last month.
Top Drawer Soccer and SoccerBuzz.com included Matheson in their Teams of the Week as well.
The Tigers stand at 5-4-1 and 2-0-0 in the Ivy League, sharing first place with Penn. Saturday, Princeton will look to continue its perfect league start against Columbia on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium at 1 p.m.
