The Princeton field hockey team concludes the regular season this Friday night at Penn needing one thing: a win. The Tigers have already clinched a share of the 2007 Ivy League title, its third in a row and 13th in 14 seasons, but a win at Penn will assure the Tigers of the Ivy League's spot in the NCAA play-in game on Tuesday for a chance to go to the NCAA tournament.
Princeton enters the weekend with a 5-1 Ivy League record and is a game ahead of a four-way tie for second place between Columbia, Cornell, Harvard and Penn, all at 4-2. Should Princeton win, the Tigers would be 6-1 and atop the standing by themselves, yet a Penn win would create a logjam that would result in either a three- or four-way tie atop the standings. For a list of tiebreakers should that situation arise, click here.
Princeton carries an eight-game win streak into Friday night's game, its longest since winning 10 straight in 2001. The Tigers come off a pair of convincing non-league wins in which they defeated Virginia Commonwealth 5-1 and Monmouth 9-1. The Tigers look to carry that explosive offense into the Penn game considering that the last three Princeton-Penn games have been decided by a single goal.
Several Tigers had big games against Monmouth on Tuesday, led by sophomore Christina Bortz's three goals. Sophomore Katherine Cape also added three goals while senior Paige Schmidt had a goal and an assist in the win. Princeton got goals from six players in the win, while four added assists.
The Tigers have faced Penn in their final Ivy League game of the season every year since 1993. Princeton has taken the last two games, both by 2-1 scores, winning two seasons ago at Franklin Field and last year at Class of '52 Stadium. Penn won the previous year in a game played at Princeton by a score 2-1. In last year's game, junior Jolly McGarvie broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 57:18, but Penn tied the game with seven seconds left to force overtime, where Schmidt settled things with a backhanded lift 13 minutes into the overtime period. A year earlier, the Tigers came back from being down 1-0 with two goals in the final 20 minutes to win 2-1. Schmidt had an assist in that win.
Princeton is 16-15-3 all-time against Penn and is 8-10-1 in games played at Penn. The Tigers have won their last six trips to Franklin Field and have won two straight in the series.
Penn enters the weekend following a 4-1 win at Brown last weekend. The Quakers are 8-8 overall and 4-2 in Ivy play. Penn has alternated wins and losses in its last four games, beating Yale and Brown, but falling to Columbia and Duke.
Should Princeton win Friday night, the Tigers will advance to one of three NCAA play-in games held next Tuesday against the champion of the Atlantic-10 Conference. That game will be hosted by the Ivy League champion.
