The 10th-ranked Princeton women's hockey team returns to Hobey Baker Rink this weekend for league games against Cornell and Colgate. Princeton swept Boston University and top-ranked New Hampshire in non-league action last weekend.
Princeton's record climbed back to .500 following its first sweep of the season a week ago in New England. Princeton started things at Boston University on Saturday with a 4-2 win. Princeton jumped to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but the Terriers answered both times and game entered the third period tied at 2-2. The tie last four minutes into the period when junior Christine Foster scored the game winner in an eventual 4-2 win. Foster, along with senior Lizzie Keady each had a goal and an assist in the win, while sophomore Melanie Wallace and junior Annie Greenwood added additional goals and junior goaltender Kristen Young made 26 saves.
The following day, Princeton won in similar fashion, when Keady broke a tie early in the third period and the Tigers skated away with a 2-1 win at New Hampshire. Senior Sonja Novak gave Princeton a 1-0 lead in the first period and the Wildcats tied the score in the second, before Keady's game winner in the third. Young made 21 saves in that win as the Tigers upended the nation's top ranked team, and won at UNH for the first time in program history. Princeton was 0-20-1 in games at New Hampshire entering Sunday.
For her performances over the weekend, Young was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season. She also was named the USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week. Young is now 3-3-2 in the Tiger goal this season with a 2.10 goals-against and a .916 save percentage.
Keady also received recognition as she was named to the honor roll following a three-point weekend that was highlighted by the game winner at UNH. Senior Brittany Salmon and freshman Sasha Sherry also added assists in each game over the weekend.
Princeton, which started the season with four home games, then went on the road for four, begins a stretch of four more games at home this weekend against Cornell and Colgate. The stretch continues next weekend when second-ranked Mercyhurst visits Baker Rink.
On Friday the Tigers host Cornell at 7 p.m. Princeton has won 14 straight games against the Big Red, including shutouts in three of the last four games played. Last year the Tigers topped Cornell 1-0 in Ithaca and 3-0 in Princeton. The Tigers are 39-19-2 all-time against the Big Red.
Cornell enters the weekend 3-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ECAC Hockey following a tie in its last game against Brown. Cornell won the first two games it played this season, sweeping Vermont, but is just 1-4-1 since, topping Niagara and falling to Wayne State twice, Niagara and Yale.
Princeton and Colgate renew their recent rivalry on Saturday as the teams have played eight times in the past two seasons. Princeton took all four meetings in 2005-06 and the two regular-season games in 2006-07, but Colgate took both playoff games last season at Hobey Baker Rink to advance to the ECAC semifinals. Princeton is 15-2-2 all-time against Colgate and is 8-2-1 against the Raiders on home ice.
Colgate is 2-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey entering the weekend. The Raiders began the season with a tough non-league schedule, going 0-5-1 against the likes of ranked foes Boston College, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Mercyhurst. Colgate won its last two games as it began league play last weekend by defeating Brown 4-1 and Yale 3-2 in overtime.
Princeton remains at home following the Thanksgiving holiday to face Mercyhurst on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.
