With Eyes On History, Ivy League Title, Women's Volleyball Awaits Final Home Weekend
November 02, 2007 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team won't celebrate an Ivy League championship this weekend, but it can take a giant step towards that goal. Two wins would drop the Tigers' magic number to two in league play. Those two wins would ignite one celebration, though, as head coach Glenn Nelson stands two wins away from longtime softball coach Cindy Cohen on the all-time wins Princeton wins list.
Nelson has 557 wins with the women's volleyball program, two behind former colleague Cohen, who led Princeton to a pair of Women's College World Series appearances in the 1990s. Nelson, the only coach to lead both a men's and women's volleyball program to the NCAA tournament in the same calendar year, has 690 varsity wins at Princeton between the two programs, although the men's team became an official varsity program in 1997. According to the NCAA, Nelson has won 1,077 matches as a head coach for Princeton.
Four more wins this season will clinch a 14th Ivy League title for Princeton and its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2001. Princeton is 9-0 in the Ivy League, two matches ahead of both Penn and Yale in league play. The Tigers will host Dartmouth (6-4) and Haravrd (2-8) this weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. showdown with the Big Green Friday night. A victory for Princeton tonight would eliminate Dartmouth from the Ivy League race, but based on this season's results, it won't come easily. Princeton earned a 3-2 thriller in Hanover two weeks ago to remain unbeaten.
The hitting trio of Lindsey Ensign, Parker Henritze and Sheena Donohue rank second, third and fourth in the Ivy League, respectively, in kills. Ensign has the league's top hitting percentage and Henritze leads the Ivies in aces. Teams don't get three top hitters without an effective setter, and Bailey Robinson leads the Ivy League with 14.1 assists per game, two more than any other player in the Ivy League.
