O'Neill, Prichard Take Lead in 63-55 Win at St. Francis (N.Y.)
November 29, 2007 | Women's Basketball
BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Princeton led the entire second half at St. Francis last night in a 63-55 win, getting the victory without Meagan Cowher as its first- or second-leading scorer.
Cowher, Princeton's leading scorer on the season, finished with 13 points while Ali Prichard and Caitlin O'Neill had big evenings for the Tigers with 16 and 14 points, respectively. O'Neill's total was a career best, and the junior did it on the strength of four three-pointers, also a career high.
The Tigers (2-5) shot a season-best 51.1 percent from the field and hit nine three-pointers. St. Francis (2-4) shot 43.4 percent but was outrebounded by Princeton 38-24 and shot just 4 of 15 from three-point range and 5 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Princeton led by just two at the half but used a 7-0 run to open up a 12-point lead at 47-35 with 12:54 to go. From there, St. Francis got the deficit down to six on two occasions but came no closer.
Cowher led Princeton on the glass with nine rebounds with Prichard adding eight. Princeton committed 21 turnovers to 15 for the Terriers, but the rebounding and shooting advantages, coupled with the lackluster free-throw shooting by St. Francis, allowed the Tigers the win. Tani Brown tied a career best with seven assists.
Tiffany Hill led St. Francis with 19 points and seven boards while Kara Ayers had 18 and five.
Princeton took a 33-31 lead into the halftime break on the strength of 7 of 10 shooting from beyond the arc and a 19-9 rebounding advantage. O'Neill had three first-half three-pointers to lead the Tigers, who shot 54.5 percent from the field in the game's first 20 minutes. St. Francis shot 44.8 percent.
No team led by more than four points in the first half and Princeton didn't take the lead until O'Neill's first three-pointer with 10:35 to play before the break. St. Francis led only briefly the rest of the half and the Tigers had a four-point lead as late as 33-29 on a Cheryl Stevens layup with 1:43 before the break. Deanna Petrucci cut the deficit in half for the Terriers with a layup on the other end and the teams entered halftime two points apart.
Despite the rebounding and shooting advantage, the Tigers kept St. Francis in the game with 15 first-half turnovers compared to six for the home squad. O'Neill's three trios were good enough to lead the team in scoring at the break, while Cowher was right behind with eight points and five rebounds. Tani Brown had five points with six first-half assists.
Hill led St. Francis at the break with 13 first-half points and five rebounds.
The Tigers will return home for a visit from Duquesne Saturday at 6 p.m.
