Schmidt Earns Third Ivy Player of the Year Award
November 07, 2007 | Field Hockey
Senior Paige Schmidt became the first three-time Ivy League Player of the Year when she received the honor from the Ivy League on Wednesday. Schmidt led a group of seven Tigers that received All-Ivy honors.
Schmidt scored nine goals and had five assists overall and was also a unanimous selection to the first team by the eight Ivy League coaches. The senior started all 18 games for the Tigers and led a stout Tiger defense to a third-straight title. Schmidt scored Princeton's first two goals in their win at Penn last Friday that clinched the Ivy title outright for Princeton.
Schmidt had joined former Tigers Liz Fagan, Amy MacFarlane and Ilvy Friebe as the league's only two-time winners of the League's Player of the Year Award prior to the announcement.
Joining Schmidt as first-team All-Ivy were teammates Christina Bortz and Sarah Reinprecht. Bortz, a sophomore, led Princeton with 12 goals and 32 points. Reinprecht, a junior and former League Rookie of the Year, had six points while anchoring the Tiger defense and midfield and was named first-team All-Ivy for the second time in her career.
Princeton's Holly McGarvie, Candice Arner and Kristin Schwab were named to the Ivy League's second team, while Kraftin Schreyer received an honorable mention. McGarvie was a first-team selection last season, while the others are receiving their first Ivy League year-end recognition.
