Volleyball Eyes Potentially Historic Weekend At Brown, Yale
November 08, 2007 | Women's Volleyball
Following a 3-0 loss to Liberty at the Villanova Tournament, records and Ivy League titles were the farthest thing from the minds of the Princeton women's volleyball players. They were 2-3 overall after returning every starter from a team that lost only three matches all of the previous season. They bounced back with a 3-0 win over William & Mary, then a 3-1 win over Binghamton and a 3-2 win over Villanova. What started as a small snowball that weekend has grown into an avalanche of 17 straight wins for the Tigers, who, like their head coach, stand on the precipice of history.
Princeton is 19-3 overall, 11-0 in the Ivy League, and stands in control of the championship race. Princeton needs one win this weekend, either Friday night at Brown (7 p.m.) or Saturday at Yale (4 p.m.), to clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title. A sweep would clinch an outright title, Princeton's 14th in women's volleyball, and its first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2001. Princeton could clinch the outright title Friday night if it defeats Brown and Yale defeats Penn.
Led by Ivy League Player of the Week and Academic All-District selection Parker Henritze, Princeton leads the Ivy League in kills, hitting percentage and assists. The trio of Henritze, Lindsey Ensign and Sheena Donohue accounts for three of the Ivy League's top four in kills, and setter Bailey Robinson leads the league in assists by more than two per game.
Besides going for his 11th Ivy League title, head coach Glenn Nelson is seeking out some personal history. He is currently tied with longtime colleague and legendary softball coach Cindy Cohen with 559 victories for their respective programs (Nelson has 133 with the men's team), and one more win will put him as the all-time win leader at Princeton.
