Pioneers Hold Tigers as Women's Hoops Falls 79-65

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A week after inspiring efforts against Big East foes Rutgers and Syracuse, the Princeton women's basketball team suffered a letdown Saturday at Sacred Heart, falling to 79-65.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton (3-10) with 20 points while Caitlin O'Neill added 12 and freshman Krystal Hill had a career-best 11 points. Cowher's 20 moves her to 1,368 for her career, past Jennifer Donnelly '88 into fourth place on the all-time scoring list. Next up is former teammate Becky Brown '06 at 1,608 points.
Sacred Heart (6-5) went on a 10-0 run following Cowher's opening bucket and never allowed Princeton to cut much off the lead. Seven minutes into the half, the Pioneers had made 8 of 11 from the field with seven assists on their eight field goals. Sacred Heart was also outrebounding Princeton 7-2 at that point and finished the half shooting 53.1 percent (17 of 32).
Khalia Cain led Sacred Heart with 14 first-half points and gave the Pioneers their largest lead of 15 on a long two with seven seconds left in the half for a 38-23 advantage. Cowher led the Tigers with eight points before the break.
Sacred Heart's lead grew to as much as 21 on a bucket by Kaitlin Sowinski with 16:57 to play. Sowinski led all scorers with 23 points as one of four Pioneers in double-figures.
Princeton cut the lead to single digits just once after that point, on a Cowher basket just after the eight-minute mark at 58-49, but the Tigers got no closer.
Sacred Heart shot 52.6 percent (30 of 57) for the game while Princeton hit at a 45.5 percent (25 of 55) clip. The Tigers were outrebounded 36-28 and had 15 turnovers to Sacred Heart's 13.
Princeton will return to the court next Saturday, Dec. 29 at Rider for a 2 p.m. tip.
