Princeton Stymies Clarkson 2-0
February 10, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- A stingy defensive effort by the Princeton women's hockey resulted in a 2-0 win over Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. Freshman Melanie Wallace put the Tigers ahead on the first shot of the game and Princeton held from there for it 14th win of the season.
The win temporarily moved Princeton into a tie for fourth place in the ECAC Hockey League standings with Colgate, but the Raiders upset sixth-ranked Harvard 3-1. Princeton remains in fifth-place in the standings but has a game-in-hand on the Raiders, coming tomorrow afternoon at St. Lawrence.
Princeton jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and held the Knights in check throughout Saturday's contest before adding an insurance goal late in the final period. Wallace put the Tigers on the scoreboard just 76 seconds after the opening faceoff, knocking in a shot during a scramble in front of the Clarkson goal. Senior Kim Pearce assisted on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, Pearce made it 2-0 with 6:15 left in regulation, scoring on a breakaway to seal the win for the visitors. Wallace and sophomore Katherine Dineen assisted on Pearce's 13th goal of the season.
Clarkson held a slight 22-21 shot advantage, but could not solve Princeton sophomore Kristen Young, who made 22 saves for the shutout.
Princeton finishes its weekend tomorrow afternoon at St. Lawrence.
