Princeton Closes Regular Season Looking to Gain Home Ice in the Playoffs
February 15, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team enters its final weekend of the regular season with a shot at home ice for next weekend's ECAC Hockey League Quarterfinals. The Tigers currently sit a point behind fourth-place Colgate in the standings, but face the Raiders on Friday night at Baker Rink. Princeton completes the regular season a day later against Cornell. The game against Colgate will be video streamed online in Tiger Zone.
Princeton gained a point on Colgate with last weekend's three-point trip to Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The Tigers entered the weekend trailing Colgate by two points. Following Colgate's loss on Friday to Dartmouth, the Tigers pulled even with the Raiders for a short time on Saturday when they defeated Clarkson 2-0. A few hours later, Colgate knocked off Harvard 3-1 to regain the two-point edge. Princeton chipped one of those points off a day later when it tied St. Lawrence.
Colgate currently holds down fourth with a 13-6-1 league record. Princeton's current record is 12-6-2. Colgate is four points behind a second-place tie between Harvard and St. Lawrence and Princeton is four points ahead of Yale. While Colgate could climb to third, and Princeton could drop to sixth, it is most likely that Princeton and Colgate will finish fourth and fifth in the standings and play each other, with the lone question being whether those games will be played in Hamilton, N.Y., or in Princeton.
Princeton moved within a point of Colgate thanks to its first three-point weekend in almost three months, and its second three-point weekend against the North Country pair of teams. Princeton went 1-0-1 this season against both Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Princeton remains unbeaten in eight all-time meetings with Clarkson.
On Saturday at Clarkson, freshman Melanie Wallace opened the scoring 1:06 into the game and that goal stood up to be the game winner as senior Kim Pearce added an insurance tally, with an assist from Wallace, at 13:45. Sophomore goaltender Kristen Young made 22 saves for the shutout.
A day later, Wallace again had a goal and an assist as she scored the game-tying goal with six minutes left in regulation in a 3-3 tie. She also had an assist in the game and was named the league's Rookie of the Week thanks to her four-point performance. Pearce, sophomore Katherine Dineen and junior Marykate Oakley each had points in both games. Oakley extended her point streak to eight games with three assists in the two games.
On Friday, Princeton and Colgate meet for the sixth time in the past two seasons. Princeton swept Colgate in the regular season last year, winning 6-2 at home and 2-1 in Hamilton. The teams met in the ECACHL quarterfinals at Princeton and the Tigers won a pair of games, 3-0 and 5-4. Princeton was the two-seed and Colgate was the seventh-seed.
The teams' first meeting this season came on Nov. 18 at Colgate and Princeton came away with a 3-2 win. The teams traded first period goals before Dineen gave Princeton the lead with a power-play goal in the second period. Junior Brittany Salmon scored the eventual game winner early in the third period before Colgate closed the gap with a late power-play goal. Young made 37 saves, including 21 in the third period for the win.
Princeton is 14-0-2 all-time against the Raiders and has won the last five meetings in a row, after the teams played to a pair of ties in 2004-05.
Colgate is 14-13-2 overall and 13-6-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. The Raiders enter the weekend off a win over Harvard last Saturday. That win snapped a three-game losing skid, in which Colgate fell to Dartmouth, Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Colgate was 9-1-1 in the 11 games prior to that.
Regardless of the result of Friday night's game, both teams have to get back on the ice on Saturday as Princeton hosts Cornell and Colgate travels to Quinnipiac.
Princeton closes out the 2006-07 regular season on Saturday afternoon against Cornell. Princeton has controlled the all-time series of late, winning the last 13 meetings between the two schools and is 38-19-2 all-time against the Big Red. Princeton picked up a 1-0 shutout win at Cornell on Nov. 17. Pearce was the only player able to find the back of the net, and Young made 11 saves for the shutout. Princeton outshot Cornell 30-11 in the game.
Cornell is 3-22-2 overall and 3-16-1 in the league. The Big Red is winless in five games (0-4-1) since a 3-0 win over Union. Cornell skated to a 1-1 tie at Clarkson in that span and had a 2-0 second-period lead over St. Lawrence as well.
Princeton will continue its season next weekend with a best-of-three ECAC Hockey League quarterfinal series, with the opponent and location to be determined this weekend.
