Women's Hockey Moves Closer To Home Ice With 1-0 Victory Over Colgate
February 16, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
Saturday is Senior Day for Laura Watt, but she did all she could to make sure it wouldn't be her last game at Baker Rink. The senior defenseman set up the only goal on Princeton's first shot of the night of the night, which was deflected by freshman Melanie Wallace, and sophomore goaltender Kristen Young made it stand up with 20 saves in a 1-0 win over Colgate. The win moves Princeton one point ahead of the Raiders with one game remaining, meaning the Tigers can clinch home ice against Colgate in next weekend's ECAC quarterfinals with a win Saturday over Cornell.
Wallace scored her eighth goal of the season 8:05 into the first period on the power play. Following a tripping penalty to Tara French, Watt ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that was deflected by Wallace and snuck past Brook Wheeler and into the net. It was the first shot of the night for the Tigers, and considering the defensive attack Princeton put on the rest of the way, it was the only one it would need.
Both teams fought hard for this win, knowing that home ice was on the line. Each side dominated in spurts, and there were also moments where the teams traded possession at center ice. Colgate's best chance came late, when Sam Hunt got free on a breakaway in the third period, but Young was up for the challenge once again. She turned away the shot and preserved the shutout late, even as the Raiders pulled their goalie in the final seconds.
Princeton hosts Cornell Saturday at 4 p.m.
